Johnny Mars is the world’s no 1 Harmonica player who is about to use his musical influences to create a One World School Children’s Choir within the South West. As a gifted musician who has, from an early age, been listening to jazz and blues, which allowed him to fulfil his own childhood dreams of playing with leading artists including BB King. Following his own diverse love of music, led to him appearing with 90’s pop band, Bananarama, playing the harmonica and appearing in the video of their top twenty single – The Preacherman back in 1991.
As a young child growing up in the deep southern states of America, Johnny’s parents would listen to the radio and he would hear such artists as Muddy Waters, Little Walter & BB King. An apprenticeship that allowed him to follow his own personal dream of becoming a credible musician in his own right. A true talent who has appeared on the same bill as Jim Hendrix and during this time Johnny recorded songs for Mercury Record Company, including ‘Deep in the Wilderness’. The Johnny Mars band travelled and appeared on the same billing as Alice Cooper and Santana. “Everyone was out to have a good time” says Johnny reflecting on those days of young people trying to change the world.
The Johnny Mars band toured with ‘Magic Sam’, a guitarist and singer from San Francisco, and played on the same bills as the Paul Butterfield band, as well as Earl Hooker, BB King and blues man Jessie Fuller. Johnny continues to perform today at major blues festivals with appearances at Glastonbury and concerts in the UK and across Europe, as well as the States.
As a side line, Johnny has been enthusing young generations with the harmonica which started the idea of “Dare to Dream, Aim to Achieve” and now he is keen to see his own words and music be performed by school children across the South West region. An inspiring vision of school children coming together to sing and enjoy the love of music that Johnny hopes will encourage them into developing their own musical talents. An ambitious project which is driven by Johnny as the Musical Director and by working closely with music teachers to develop a choir of enriching voices to perform the “Anthem”. Johnny’s dream is to see the anthem become a global and inspiring song that is performed by school children around the world.
